OUR JOURNEY

The Liberian Canadian Association of London (LICAL) began in 2019 with a small group of less than 30 dedicated individuals. We were a collective of newcomers who shared a common goal and vision: to create a supportive and thriving community for fellow Liberians in London, Ontario. Today, we are proud to have grown to over 75 members, a testament to our shared commitment and expanding reach.

Celebrating our community and supporting each other

We are incredibly proud of our programs, especially our annual Independence Day celebration on July 26th, which brings our community together in joy and remembrance. Beyond celebrations, LICAL is dedicated to supporting every member through life's milestones, including new mothers, baby showers, weddings, engagements, birthdays, graduations, and back-to-school initiatives. We also champion our youth's extracurricular activities and organize festive Christmas and Thanksgiving events. Our commitment to comprehensive community support is at the heart of everything we do.

Our guiding principles

Unity & inclusion: Everyone belongs

We believe a strong community is built when everyone feels welcome, respected, and valued. LICAL embraces diversity within the Liberian community and creates inclusive spaces where individuals of all backgrounds, ages, and experiences can participate, contribute, and feel a sense of belonging.

Cultural pride: Honouring our heritage

We celebrate and preserve Liberian culture, traditions, and history as a source of identity, strength, and intergenerational connection. Through cultural expression and shared experiences, we foster pride in our heritage while encouraging understanding and respect within the broader community.

Transparency & accountability: Trust through good governance

LICAL is committed to ethical leadership, open communication, and responsible decision-making. We promote transparency in our operations and financial stewardship, ensuring accountability to our members, donors, partners, and funders while building trust and credibility.

Our vision: Building a lasting legacy

At the Liberian Canadian Association of London (LICAL), our hopes and dreams are rooted in building a strong, lasting foundation for generations to come. We envision a future where our children grow up deeply connected to their culture—proud of their heritage, confident in their identity, and supported by a community that nurtures their growth and potential. We aspire to continue celebrating one another through shared traditions, cultural events, and meaningful connections that keep our heritage alive. By uplifting each other in times of need and joy, we strengthen the bonds that make our community resilient, united, and full of life. Our dream is to create a true “home away from home”—a place where every member feels welcomed, valued, and supported. A space where newcomers are embraced with open arms, friendships are built, and no one feels alone. As we look ahead, we are committed to growing and expanding our presence in London, Ontario. We aim to reach more families, engage more youth, and continue building a vibrant and supportive Liberian community.
